The Lower Phase consists of Year 1 and Year 2. Children are taught by their own form teacher with specialist teachers teaching French, music, physical education and drama. Emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy to ensure children have a solid foundation on which to build their future learning. The rest of the curriculum is delivered through a topic-based approach to give children a greater understanding and broaden their horizons beyond a subject-based approach.
There is a very gentle introduction to homework in Reception and the Lower Phase through reading books and spelling but this is tailored to each child’s ability to enhance the work in these areas at school. This also provides the parents with the pleasure of seeing their child’s progress and is extremely rewarding for both parent and child.
Children with special educational needs, including those that are gifted and talented, and those with English as an additional language are supported within the school and by specialists whenever appropriate. Each child’s progress is monitored throughout their time at school to ensure they reach their full potential.
